Balancing Your Blood Sugar Level

Balancing Your Blood Sugar Level
Maintaing a healthy blood sugar level is critical to your health.  Having high or low blood sugar is equally damaging.  High blood sugar levels can lead to prediabetes or diabetes.  Your body produces insulin to move the glucose in your blood, to the cells, so they can produce energy.  The key is having the right amount of glucose in your blood, so that you have optimum health.  Here are some tips on balancing your blood sugar level.

Healthy Diet

Eating a diet of fast digesting carbs can result in a spike of blood sugar, followed by a rapid dip.  This can lead to low energy and cravings as your body responds to the change in blood sugar levels.  One way to avoid this is to have any high carb foods after you have eaten fiber and protein.  Another way to help offset the large amount of sugar in a high carb meal is to get some exercise.  This will help your body use that sugar for energy and get it out of your blood stream quicker.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a common spice that is high in antioxidants and is loaded with health benefits.  It has been used since ancient Egyptian times to boost health.  Although more research is needed, early studies show that it can help your body use the insulin it produces to move sugar into your cells.  It can also help reduce the amount of sugar that moves into your bloodstream after a meal.  You can add it to your food or drink as a flavoring, or take it as a supplement.

Ginseng

Ginseng is another herb that has been used for it's health benefits for centuries.  Like cinnamon, it is rich in antioxidants that help reduce inflammation.  It is a slow growing root that can be harvested between before 4 years or after 6 years, depending on it's usage.  The two main types are American and Asian.  And both types have been studied for their ability to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated helps your kidneys to flush out extra sugar from your blood.  The best way to stay hydrated is by drinking pure water and herbal teas.  You can also maintain healthy hydration levels by eating foods that are rich in water like oatmeal, watermelon, and cucumbers.

MAnage Stress

When you are stressed, your body releases hormones that cause your blood sugar levels to rise.  Movement and relaxation techniques, like yoga, can help you lower your stress levels and maintain healthy blood sugar levels.  Or maybe for you, it's going for a walk, gardening, or dancing.   Stress is hard on your health in a lot of different ways, so managing your stress is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
