Health Benefits of Oats
People have eaten oats for thousands of years.  They have also been fed to livestock.  They are a rich source of fiber and are a good plant based protein option.  Oats are considered gluten free since they aren't a type of barley, rye or wheat.  But because oats are sometimes grown and/or processed near these other grains, they can become contaminated.  So if gluten is an issue for you, look for certified gluten free oats.  Here are some of the surprising health benefits of oats.

Increases Immunity

Oats naturally contain beta-glucans which are known to support immune function and reduce inflammation.  When beta-glucans stimulate your immune repsonse, your white blood cells are called into action and they can help reduce bacteria and fungus in your body.

Healthy Weight

The high amount of fiber in oats, along with their ability to absorb water, can help you feel full longer.  If you eat protein with your oatmeal, you will feel full even longer.  For example, you could add nuts and seeds to a bowl of oatmeal for a satisfying and healthy meal.

Nutritional

In addition to containing fiber, oats contain important vitamins and minerals.  One serving of oats contains 64% of the recommended daily amount of manganese.  Manganese is important because it plays a role in supporting bone growth, energy levels, and hormone balance.  Oats also provide more than 15 percent of the daily recommended amount of copper and selenium, along with 10% of the daily iron recommended.

Blood Sugar Balance

Unflavored steel-cut or rolled oats have a low score on the glycemic index.  This means they won't spike your blood sugar when you eat them.  You also won't feel the dip in energy that happens when your blood sugar drops after being spiked.  Your body digests oats slowly which means they provide sustained energy.
