Cucumbers are popular around the world and are a versatile food. They are technically fruits and grow on vines or bushes.  Although there are many types of cucumbers, you can generally categorize them as slicing or pickling.  They can be added  to water for extra flavor, or eaten in salads and sandwiches.  They also make an easy appetizer or snack.  But, you may have wondered if cucumbers are actually good for you since they seem to be mostly water.  Here are some interesting facts about cucumbers.

Anti-Inflammatory

Cucumbers have been traditionally used in Auyervedic medicine to reduce inflammation.  They are rich in antioxidants, that combat the normal damage done to your cells in daily living, and reduce inflammation.  A healthy diet should contain lots of antioxidants and cucumber is a good source of them.

Promotes Hydration

Since cucumbers are about 95% water, they are a great addition to your diet if you want to stay hydrated.  Your body needs water to regulate it's temperature and remove wastes.  Drinking plenty of pure water is one way you can stay hydrated.  Or you can substitute foods rich in water to help you meet your hydration needs.

Healthy Weight Management

Because cucumbers are mostly water, they are low in calories.  So you can substitute cucumbers for higher calorie foods to maintain a healthy weight.  There is some evidence that people who eat foods that contain high levels of water and are low in calories, tend to be able to loose weight and/or maintain a healthy weight.

Maintain Blood Sugar

Some animal studies have shown that cucumbers help maintain healthy blood sugar levels.  And this makes sense, since they are mostly water and contain some soluble fiber.  It is a plant based food that is low in carbohydrates and sugar.

High in Nutrients

Cucumbers are particularly high in vitamin K, which helps keep your bones healthy.  They also contain magnesium, potassium, manganese, and vitamin C.  To get the maximum amound of nutrients and fiber from a cucucumber, be sure you eat the skin.
