Plant Based Iron
Iron is important for all living things.  Your body uses it to make hemoglobin which is a protein in your blood.  Hemoblobin transports oxygen to your tissue and organs.  This makes it obvious that you need enough iron to have healthy blood.  But too much iron can be harmful.  The iron found in animal based foods is different than the iron that is found in plants.  Most people can utilize the iron from either plants or animals.   Here are some great ways to get plant based iron.

LENTILS

Lentil come in many varieties and are a healthy food no matter what type you eat.  They are more than 25% protein and are loaded with vitamins and minerals, including iron.  They are high in fiber which is a benefit to your gut health.  They are also easy to add to your diet.  You can make a lentil loaf or patty, lentil soup, a cold lentil salad, or sprinkle them on mixed greens.


Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are little power houses of nutition.  They contain fiber, healthy fats, iron, and magensium.  They also contain antioxidants which help protect your cells against free radical damage which happens routinely.  Antioxidants also help reduce inflammation which is important for having as pain free a life as possible.  It's easy to add pumpkin seeds to your diet as a topping on cereals and salads, or in a smoothie.

Cashews

Cashews are very versatile, have many health benefits, and contain copper and iron.  They are rich in fiber and healthy fats.  You can make a dairy free sauce or cheese with them.  You can also eat them plain or add them to smoothies.

Black Olives

Black olives are a spurprisingly healthy fruit.  You probably know of the benefits of olive oil, but probably haven't thought to add more olives to your diet.  Some immature olives are green and turn black when they ripen.  Others stay green.  They are a low carb fruit but are high in several vitamins and minerals, including iron.  Considering adding them to your diet as an appetizer, to salads,  or make a spread to use as a dip.

Flaxseeds

The health benefits of flaxseeds have been spoken about for decades.  But it may have fallen off your radar.  Flaxseeds have been studied extensively are known to help you maintian a healthy weight, and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol.  It is one of the oldest crops and provides healthy fats, fiber, protein, and important vitmains and minerals, including iron.  Add them to your smoothie, cereal, overnight oats, snack bars, salads, and more.
