The Exciting Elderberry
Elderberry has been used as medicine since at least Egyptian times.  It comes from the Sambucus tree which is native to Europe, but it is grown in other parts of the world too.  There are many varieties of Sambucus, but the most common is Sambucus Nigra.  The black or blue-black berries are toxic to humans until they are cooked.  Elderberry can help you with a varety of health issues, but it most often used to treat colds and viruses.  Here are some things for you to know about the exciting elderberry.

NutritIous

Elderberries are high in vitamin C and fiber.  They are also loaded with antioxidants which is what makes them such a great support for your wellness.  Antioxidants are anti-inflammatory and inflammation is thought to be at the root cause of many health issues.  You can add elderberry to your diet in many ways.  As always, check with your health practitioner before starting something new.  Once you have the green light, you can make, or buy, tea, syrup, gummies, or juice.  Or you can consume it as a lozenge or supplement.

Ease Allergies

In addition to being commonly used to treat colds and viruses, elderberry has also been used successfully to ease allergies.  For allergies, the flower is most often used instead of the berry.  Allergies symptoms can come from an overactive immune system.  And the immune strengthening ability of the herb and it's anti-inflammatory properties, can help support your immune system.

Cardiovascular Support

Some research has shown that elderberry extract may support your cardiovascular system.  A study on mice showed that it helped improve cholesterol levels.  It's high antioxidant levels may also support blood vessels, healthy blood pressure levels, and heart health.

Blood Sugar Balance

One of the common uses of both the flower and berry, is to help support healthy blood sugar levels.  Research has shown it has a positive effect on insulin levels and glucose transport.

Digestive Health

Traditionally, elderberry was added to mixtures to improve regularity and support digestive health.  There have not been any modern studies done on this though.  Another way it can support your digestive health is by acting as a diuretic that can help you release excess fluid from your body.
