Having healthy blood sugar levels is critical to your wellness. Unstable blood sugar can lead to mood swings, low energy, weight gain and serious health issues. Balancing blood sugar levels gives you and your body enough energy to fuction well without overloading your system. Besides avoiding sugary drinks and foods, there are some easy ways to keep your blood sugar balanced.
Gymnema
Gymnema is an herb that is native to Australia, Africa and India. It has been used for thousands of years in Indian and Ayurvedic medicine. The herb helps you in balancing blood sugar levels because it makes foods taste less sweet. It also contains a chemical that reduces the amount of sugar your stomach absorbs. In addition, it's thought to stimulate insulin production which is important because insulin is what allows the glucose from sugar, to enter your cells. Gymnema sylvestre can be taken as a tea, powder, or capsule. As always, talk to your doctor before adding something new like gymnema to your diet.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon is well known for helping you balance blood sugar levels. It is high in antioxidants that can help your body in many ways. Antioxidants help reduce inflammations and reduce damage to your cells by free radicals. Cinnamon is a powerful herb that has been studied for it's many benefits, though most of the studies have not been clinical trials on humans. The two types of cinammon are cassia and ceylon. Ceylon cinammon is considered the healthier choice. Cassia cinnamon should be taken in smaller doses.
Regular Movement
Exercise, or regular movement, can help your body use the sugar that is in your bloodstream. Sitting for long periods of time can make it difficult for your body to use any excess sugar. It is recommended to get up and do some kind of movement every 30 minutes. You can take a short walk, do some air squats or do push-ups against a wall.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking plenty of water and other healthy drinks, like tea, can help keep your blood sugar levels balanced. This is because the fluids are used by your kidneys to flush out extra sugar from your blood stream. Your kidneys also perform other critical functions like removing toxins from your body and balancing hormones. The waste products removed by your kidneys are excreted in your urine.
Diet
The carbs in your diet are broken down into glucose that can increase your blood sugar levels. The most harmful carbs are those that are broken down quickly into glucose. Examples of these are white breads and rice, pasta, and potatoes. Of course, sugary drinks and foods can also increase your blood sugar levels. Eating more fiber can help because it slows down the absorption of sugar. Foods that are high in fiber include whole grains, vegetables, and legumes. You can also eat whole fruits that have a low glycemic index.
