Support Your Sinuses
Your sinuses are air filled cavities that are located behind your forehead, eyes, cheeks, and nasal bones.  Healthy sinuses are lined with a thin layer of mucous and tiny hairs that trap germs, dust and other things in the air.  The sinuses can become inflamed due to allergies, bacteria, fungus or viruses.  The inflammation in the sinuses can result in a sinus infection that can be difficult to treat.  Many people use antibiotics to get rid of a sinus infection.  But there are natural things you can do to avoid developing an infection and support your sinuses.

Stay Hydrated

It's always healthy to drink plenty of healthy liquids so that you can stay hydrated.  But it is especially important if you suspect you are developing a sinus infection.  The extra liquid will help thin the mucous and make it easier for your sinuses to drain.  Drinking water, coconut water and consuming bone broth are great ways to help you stay hydrated, reduce the inflammation and drain your sinuses.  Staying on a liquid diet can help your body to focus on healing and may help speed up your recovery,  If you don't want to stay on a liquid diet, then you can try consuming solid foods over a smaller window of time.  This is known as intermittent fasting and has many benefits.

Herbal Teas

Drinking herbal teas is a great way to stay hydrated and some herbs are known for their ability to help reduce inflammation and infections.  Licorice, ginger and echinacea teas have been used medicinally for centuries.  They are known for their ability to reduce inflammation and fight infection.  Drinking peppermint tea can help open and clear your sinuses through it's powerful vapors.  There are also tea blends that have been created to help you breath more clearly.

Nasal Sprays and Flushing

Using a natural store bought nasal spray can help relieve inflammation and help you drain your sinuses.  Some contain homeopathics or natural compounds that have studied for their ability kill bacteria.  One example is grapefruit seed extract (GSE).  GSE is created from the pulp, seeds and rind of grapefruit.  Using a saline nasal rinse or neti pot can also help drain your sinuses and clear out the substances that are causing the inflammation.  Here is some more information about natural ways to support your body if you have seasonal allergies that are causing the inflammation.

Vitamins

You can help support your immune response by taking plenty of a high quality vitamin C.  Your body is constantly using vitamin C, so take some several times during the day.  Zinc is a mineral that is also essential for immune support and many people are deficient.  It is not water soluble like vitamin C, so follow the dosage recommendations on these high quality supplements.  Garlic and onion aren't vitamins, but they are powerful antioxidants foods that can help reduce inflammation.  Garlic in particular, has been used for centuries to help the body defend against infection.  You can add them to your food or you can take garlic as a supplement.

Essential Oils

Pure food grade essential oil can help you breath easier and they also have healing properties.  Diffusing peppermint and/or eucalyptus essential oils is uplifting and may help open your sinuses.  You can also inhale, ingest or apply them topically.  Other essential oils to consider and that have been studied for their ability to fight off bacteria are tea tree, oregano, clary sage, lavender, and rosemary.
