The days are longer and plants are starting to grow again.  It won't be long before you can get fresh fruits and vegetables in the grocery store or at your local farmers market.  Eating local seasonal fruits and vegetables is healthier for you because the plants are harvested closer to their peak.  And it's better for the planet since transportation is minimal.  Here is what you need to know about  some important powerful spring fruits and vegetables.

Arugala

Arugala can be eaten by itself or with other greens in a salad.  It has a spicey peppery flavor.  It is related to kale and radishes and is part of the cruciferous vegetable family.  It has been used for both food and medicine since ancient Roman and Egyptian times.  It is a powerful antioxidant and may help protect your cells against damage.  Arugala is low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals.  This makes it a healthy addition to your diet.

Green Peas

Green peas are full of vitamins and minerals.  They also contain a fair amount of fiber which is important for your digestion.  The sugar in them quickly turns to starch after picking.  So it's best to eat them as soon as possible after picking if you want to taste their sweetness.  They are technically a legume like beans and peanuts, but they are most often sold as a vegetable.  What makes peas unique is the high amount of protein they contain compared to other vegetables.

Cherries

There are many types of cherries and they are all healthy for you.  They are one of the healthiest spring fruits because they can help reduce inflammation.  They also contain antioxidants and are a natural source of melatonin, which can help you sleep.  They fiber in them feeds your healthy gut bacteria.  Tart cherry juice has been studied for it's ability to improve exercise performance and speed up muscle recovery after intense exercise.

Blackberries

The plant compound that is resposible for it's deep dark color, also provides your body with powerful health benefits.  Blackberries are rich in vitamin C and potassium which may support your cardiovascular system.  In spite of their yummy taste, they are low on the glycemic index and won't spike your blood sugar.  They are a powerful addition to your diet because of their anti-inflammatory properties and protective plant compounds.
