Eating Well on The Road
If you're trying to eat a healthy diet, traveling and eating out may feel like a bit of a challenge.  There are so many people with dietary restrictions these days, that it is easier than ever to request a substitute or semi-custom meal.  Just keep it simple.  Here are some tips for eating well on the road.

Combine Side Dishes

If you find yourself at a restaurant with main entrees that don't appeal to you, consider combing side dishes.  For example, salad dressings in restaurants are usually made with unhealthy vegetable oils that are high in Omega-6 fatty acids.  If you are like most people, you need more Omega-3 fatty acids, and less Omega-6.  You can ask for a salad with no dressing and add on a side of steamed vegetables.  Or ask for a plain baked potato and add steamed vegetables.  If they have pure olive oil or guacamole, you add that as a healthy condiment.  

Buffets

Eating at a restaurant with a buffet is a great way for you to load up on the foods that are best for you.  Avoid anything with a sauce though, because sauces will probably contain sugar, corn syrup, vegetable oils, artificial flavors, and colorings.   Some grocery stores have buffets as well.  Modern technology is making it easier than ever to locate healthy options.

Bring Food with You

Depending on the type of traveling you are doing, you may be able to bring some healthy food with you.  You could bring a protein powder so that you can have a protein shake, organic nuts, trail mix, snack bars, and healthy meat jerky.  Fruits and vegetables could also be a great option.

Local Markets

If you're lucky, there will be a healthy grocery store or farmers market somewhere in your travels.  Farmers markets usually are full of locally grown fruits  and vegetables and freshly prepared heathly foods.  You can support the local growers, chefs, and artisans by shopping and eating at a farmers market.  Plus you will be contributing to sustainability by eliminating the high environmental cost of transported goods.

Food Trucks

Eating at a food truck is a great way to support the local economy wherever you are.  Every dish is prepared fresh and may be able to be customized to meet your needs.  Because so many people have dietary restrictions, a food truck menu often takes this into account.  However, if you don't see an option that works for you, check out the ingredients in the menu options.  You may be able to comine ingredients to create a dish that meets your needs.

  1. Having 5 kids, we spent a lot of time at McDonald's for a fast, cheap meal. I now wish I would have spent more time with a healthier option. Unfortunately, they are harder to find and not as convenient. It is worth the effort however, to search out these options.
