The health of your mouth is more important to your overall wellness than you may realize. Unhealthy bacteria in your mouth can get into your bloodstream through your gums. Once in your bloodstream, they can cause inflammation in your arteries, gut, lungs and other organs. There have been studies that have shown a correlation between people with serious health issues and poor oral health. Here are some ways to have naturally healthy teeth and gums.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Gargling with hydrogen peroxide can reduce the amount of harmful bacteria in your mouth and help break up plaques. It has been used for oral health and wound care since the early 1900s because of it's antibacterial and disinfectant properties. You can dilute 3% hydrogen peroxide with water and swish it around in your mouth to help maintain oral health and prevent infections. Don't swallow it, just spit it out. If you have a sore throat, you can add some salt and swish and gargle for 60 seconds.
Baking Soda
Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, is a natural substance that has been shown to reduce bacterial plaques in your mouth and help prevent cavities. When you rinse your mouth with a baking soda and water solution, the pH in your mouth increases, making it less acidic. This makes it more difficult for cavity-causing bacteria to multiply in your mouth. Baking soda is also a mild abrasive and has the ability to reduce or eliminate stains on your teeth. The end result is your teeth appear whiter and shinier.
Essential Oils
Essential oils have been used for their unique healing and therapeutic benefits for centuries. Clove essential oil is especially well known for how it benefits oral health. You can use it to help relieve tooth pain and bad breath, as well as help reduce gum disease. It has the natural ability to limit the development of bacteria and can help you fight mouth and throat infections. Other essential oils that can support good oral health include thyme, oregano, tea tree, anise, cinnamon and peppermint.
Activated Charcoal
Activated charcoal is made from coconut shells, bamboo, slowly burned wood, olive pits, peat, and other natural substances. It's commonly used in hospitals and emergency rooms to treat patients who are suffering from poisoning or a drug overdose. It is being used in the dental product world because it's thought to be able to remove dental plaques, reduce toxins, and lighten surface stains. Activated charcoal is mildly abrasive and can also help freshen your breath. It is becoming a popular ingredient in body care products as well.
Clays
Clays, such as bentonite and kaolin, can help pull out toxins from your skin and mouth. They may also help to re-mineralize your teeth because they contain minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium, and silicon. Clays can also help to whiten and polish your teeth as well. French Green Clay is another clay that is useful for skin and mouth health. It contains minerals and is very absorbent. French Green Clay helps cleanse your body tissues from things like oils, toxins, and impurities that are found on the surface.
